Why Daily Physical Education Matters: Our On-Site Gym and Full-Time Physical Education Teacher
When parents tour schools in Toronto, they look at classrooms, teachers and curriculum. One question is easy to miss: where, and how often, will my child move?
At Alive Montessori & Private School, the answer is - every day, in our gym!
A gym inside the school
Many schools share space, rent facilities, or fit physical activity in when they can, using external providers. We have an on-site gym, so Physical Education is a regular part of the school day for our Elementary students. No bus trips, no lost class time getting there, no cookie-cutter programs.
A full-time Physical Education teacher who knows every child
Physical Education at Alive is individualized. It is led by Ms. Anastasiia, our full-time Physical Education teacher. She comes from a background in professional artistic gymnastics and has close to 10 years of experience working with children. Because she is with our school full-time, she knows each child, she curates the program specifically for us, and customizes the material to fit each individual child’s interests, strengths and needs. This ensures each child excels at their own pace, builds confidence, prepares for new challenges, and is encouraged to try. Whether it is balance, coordination, or core strength, our program provides what your child needs. This approach is far superior to physical education classes provided by external service providers, who are limited by access and time constraints, and provide cookie-cutter programs that cannot adequately meet the variety of needs of the children.
Why movement matters in the Elementary years
Maria Montessori saw movement and learning as closely linked. Children learn through their hands and bodies, not only by sitting and listening. Regular physical activity helps children:
Physical Education this year
This year, Physical Education at Alive includes skating, our annual Terry Fox Run, and a gymnastics showcase. These teach children that being active is something we do together, as a community.
Physical Education and gymnastics: what is included
Physical Education is included in every Elementary student's day. We also offer gymnastics as a separate add-on program for children who want more. Families can ask us for details on add-on programs during a tour. Gymnastics teaches children the basics in balance, coordination, strength, tumbling and flexibility.
