Elementary children (Grades 1–6):
As children grow into the elementary years, independence takes on a new shape. In our Montessori elementary program, they are ready for more responsibility, longer-term work, and real collaboration with their peers. This is when we see them take ownership of projects that stretch over days or weeks, mentor younger children in the classroom, and begin to understand how their individual contribution fits into the life of the whole community. Rather than simply completing assignments, elementary-age children are learning to manage their own time, ask deeper questions, and see themselves as capable, contributing members of a larger group—skills that carry far beyond the classroom.
Equally important is contribution. Children genuinely want to contribute to their families and communities. They want to help. If we consistently do everything for them, over time they may lose that desire to participate. After several years, it becomes much harder to develop habits of responsibility and contribution because the opportunity has been taken away.
