Is there social interaction in a Montessori environment?

There is a perception that as the Montessori approach encourages independent work cycles, children in a Montessori classroom do not interact with each other, thus resulting in a lack of social interaction which can have a negative impact upon the child’s development. Nevertheless, while Montessori does respect the fact that each child is unique and has different areas of interests, hence the children are allowed to choose their own materials and a classroom is not expected to have children who will do the same activity at the same time, there are different ways in which social interaction is met daily.

  • A Montessori environment encourages children of different ages to be together, which is a wonderful way to learn from each other and to help each other, to foster collaborative learning. In this way, children learn how to communicate efficiently, how to be respectful and how to develop an attitude of willingness to help others.
  • In a Montessori prepared environment children are guided on how to practice grace and courtesy, helping in this way to instill in young children a love and respect for the others that will continue to grow throughout their life.
  • A Montessori environment encourages a sense of community, of family, where children are able to do everything: prepare food, clean the space, keep everything organized, help those in need, learn from others.
  • Show and tell is a wonderful weekly activity which motivates children to share with others their interests, their passions, to encourage them to speak in front of an audience and to become confident.

To conclude, there are many ways in which the children do interact with each other constantly, and even more they interact in a classroom environment which resembles very much a real community.
