Montessori Activities At Home

At Alive Montessori School, we believe that learning goes beyond the classroom. Montessori education encourages children to explore, create, and grow in a hands-on, child-centered environment. We know many parents are eager to extend this philosophy at home, but might not know where to start. That’s why we are excited to launch our new blog series: Montessori Activities for Home.

In this series, we will share simple, practical activities that you can easily set up at home. These activities are designed to help your child develop independence, concentration, and a love for learning while using everyday household items. From sensory play and practical life skills to creative exploration, each article will guide you step-by-step on how to bring Montessori principles into your home.

Stay tuned as we release our first article in the coming days, and let’s work together to foster a lifelong love of learning in our children!

Activity #1: Sewing for Beginners

Sewing is a wonderful Montessori activity that develops fine motor skills, concentration, and patience. It's also a practical life skill that children can carry with them throughout their lives. Today, we're introducing a simple sewing activity that’s perfect for young beginners.

 What You’ll Need:

  • A child-safe needle
  • Thick thread or embroidery floss
  • A small piece of fabric or felt
  • Scissors
  • A marker to draw sewing lines

Steps

Prepare the Fabric: Draw a few simple straight or wavy lines on the fabric. These will serve as your child's sewing guide.

Thread the Needle: Show your child how to carefully thread the needle. You may need to help with tying a knot at the end of the thread.

Sewing: Guide your child to start sewing along the lines you've drawn. Encourage them to push the needle through the fabric slowly and carefully.

Celebrate the Work: Once they've finished sewing their lines, celebrate the accomplishment!

This activity fosters independence, fine motor skills, and a sense of achievement, all while being a fun and creative way for your child to engage in learning.

Feel free to share your child's sewing projects with us!
