Unfortunately, the current reality is that if your child enters school unable to read, he or she may never become a fluent reader. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with a child who can’t read by age 6, but because the whole subject of teaching reading is generally poorly understood, it is very often poorly taught. And in large classrooms, a child generally does not receive the individual attention needed to get him or her over the initial hurdles and pitfalls in learning how to read. Failure in the early stages can lead to all sorts of negative outcomes that make it much more difficult to re-engage the child.
